I have grown up eating a lot of fish. Being a Bengali certainly has it’s benefits. 🙂
I spent a lot of my childhood surrounded by fish. Whether, it was at the pond at my native place, or going to the market’s with my father; fish was quite omnipresent in our lives. Simple spicy fish curry and rice is a staple in the house!
My earliest memories of fish was that of my aunt sitting with a fishing rod in her hand with some rice as bait. She is an expert in catching fish. The fish would always fall for her bait! Me on the other hand had the poorest luck in fishing! Only once in 25 years was I able to bait a fish, and even when that happened, I was 7 then; I was so excited and young, that it never struck me to pull the fish out of the water and then scream my head off! As a result, the fish got luck, plonked right back to the water and all I remember is not being successful at fishing. Ever! Hehe.
Over time, the importance of eating fish started becoming more and more prominent. Articles regularly appeared in the papers mentioning the importance to eat fish. Our simple fish curry and rice suddenly became a whole ‘Whoa’! thing!
So, why should you eat should you eat fish?
1. It contains Omega 3 Fatty Acids. These acids help reduce inflammation in your body, which in turn reduces your blood pressure and improves your immunity and your arthritis symptoms
2. It contains good fats. This in turn helps fight the bad fats which cause cholesterol (‘ninja kick to the bad cholestrol, that that you!’)
3. It contains proteins (Enough said)
So, now that you know the benefits, how often should you eat fish?
Twice a week is a good enough start. (Unless you are a Bong, when you end up eating fish only 7 days a week! And sometimes that is also not enough!! =D)
Any are there any fishes that you should avoid?
Very fatty fish like tilapia and catfish, are better avoided!
And how do you prepare the fish?
Try to avoid deep frying completely. Broiling, baking and gently cooking it in gravy get top marks!
Anything else to remember? Yes, very important:
I love fish fingers with tartar sauce. Please invite me over for lunch.. 😀 And if you are in the mood for some healthy baked fish, definitely call me over! 😀
